Planner's Comments
What a lovely weekend
for orienteering. Thanks to Richard who obviously has connections in
the right places. Thanks also to the tremendous team without whom the
event would not take place, specifically: Bill Brown with printing the
courses and generally keeping me on track, the 'putting out' team of
John McClellan, Graham Whiffen, Mark and Danny Scott, Tim Houlder, Ian
Middlebrook and Eric Waffles and the 'pulling in' team of Graham, Mark,
Tim, Eric, Dale Paget, Rob Hick, and Sarah and Andrew Houlder. Thanks
also to the controller John Parfit who indulged me and my foibles and
ensured all was fair for you.
I have rarely been
one to take the beaten track and when looking at how best to use the
area, without having overlapping and confusing control sites, thought
that loops would be the solution on the top three courses. I was also
mindful of the guidelines which say that the winning time of the top
course should be 67 minutes for an elite orienteer. It also specifies
that you shouldn't take into account the fact that you know the event
won't be attracting aforesaid elite orienteers. Clive Hallett is of
course the South West benchmark. If you take Clive's results from the
JK and the British and compare his time relative to that of the winning
M21E time then extrapolate that to his time at the Dorset Delight, this
gives a theoretical elite winning time of 68 minutes (all done with
height taken into account). As all the other courses are based on a
ratio of the M21 course then the distances you were running were about
right. I was delighted that on the day all bar one of the comments were
complimentary and for that I thank you. The courses were designed to
be physical to keep you thinking and where possible to keep you out
of the brambles and from you comments this was achieved. Job done.
To ease any congestion
at the last control we added a second box. This was 21 seconds out from
the other boxes so those that used it will find their penultimate leg
is 21 seconds longer than actual and their run in 21 seconds shorter
than actual (It doesn't affect overall times). So there you were thinking
that you can run 140 metres in 10 seconds!
I cannot finish
without thanking Liz Lockton, without whom the courses wouldn't have
appeared. Liz acted as assistant planner, helping to tag the area, casting
an eye over the courses (2 pages of comments!!!), putting out controls,
taking controls in and generally being supportive - many many thanks.

Controllers Comments
Shillingstone is
not the easiest of places on which to plan an event with its steep escarpments
and areas of thick undergrowth. Gavin opted for courses which offered
genuine route choice and, listening to runners comments, these were
varied and, on reflection, not always the best. There was one control
wrongly placed which I should have spotted and for which I apologise
(although it was adjusted once noticed). I agreed that the legs before
and after should be deleted from the course for ranking purposes.
Wessex as always
run a first class event, even down to the weather and, on behalf of
the competitors, thank you very much for everybody's time and effort.

( SARUM)
Organisers Comments
When the sun shines,
as it very often does on Wessex events it really makes all the difference
to both the organisational effort and the competitors; and the sun certainly
shone on both the Saturday and the Sunday. We were privileged to have
Ultrasport in attendance, coming 190 odd miles to do so; parking was
free thanks to a very friendly farmer, and for the first time we had
a drinks point (used by 30 competitors) out in the forest.
The postal strike
did nothing to help with our entry system but Email and telephone entries
to a later cut off date seemed to work out alright. I have as usual
to thank all the officials and the club members of our small club that
handled the running of the event, indeed on both days, as the 'putting
up' day is equally hard work.
In 'Lost Property'
I have one thumb compass for use in the right hand on a black cord with
an attached average speed calculator green sheet. I also have a colourful
lapel badge labelled Hartington Hall Youth Hostel. Let me know if you
wish to claim them

String
Course Result
The
string course had a Peter Pan theme. The going under foot was quite
difficult, especially for toddlers due to the number of felled branches
hidden under new grass. I had tried to clear most of the creeping brambles.
I hope everyone enjoyed the challenge.
