Click here for Splits PLANNERS' COMMENTS We had joint planners for this event, myself and Charlie Morton. As you may know, Charlie is having treatment for leukaemia so couldn't be involved in the physical planning. While he was recovering from his initial bout of chemo he "armchair planned" the courses, having planned on this area before. We discussed the courses and he gave me some tips about the area, as I had not run here before (always been stuck in the download tent!). My job was to go out and check all the sites and "tweak" the courses to suit. It was lovely to be out in the forest on a clear day with the sun shining (yes, it did shine!) seeing all the deer, foxes, rabbits, buzzards etc. I did have to alter the Brown course a little, as Charlie originally made it nearly 13km! He argued that the area was very fast and the really fit runners would get round it in about 60 minutes. But I felt it needed to be shorter and we settled on 11.3. This proved to be a good length, as the winner, Mark Nixon, completed the course in 58.44. We had an exceptional number of runners on the Green and eventually ran out of maps. Our apologies for this if you were one of the people denied a green run. We were pleased to see that we had two takers for the Red course and hope you both enjoyed your run. Our grateful thanks to all members who helped with putting out boxes and dragging in controls on the day - one club member put out, dragged in and managed a non-competitive run as well! Thank you to all of you who came and we hope you enjoyed your runs and the area. And finally, my personal thanks to Charlie Morton for his help with planning and we all wish him a speedy recovery. Kay Sayer
CONTROLLERS COMMENTS I have to say that it is a pleasure rather than a chore to control events in areas such as Rushmore. I hope you all enjoyed your time in the forest as much as I did. I have to accept that the course lengths were longer than the guidelines. The speeds at the 2004 regional event suggested that the forest would be very fast at this time of year, and in fact the dry conditions preceding the event made it even faster. In addition with so many tracks and paths anything other than the very short legs have a fast track option. BOF don't define 'majority' but I would say that the range of times for competitors on the Brown, Blue, and Green courses were OK at 71%, 78%, 76% inside the guideline majority range. The range of times on the Light Green however do suggest that it should have been shorter. My thanks to Kay Sayer for all her hard work in the forest, to Bill Brown for his work on the maps and SI, and to Alan Hooper and the Wessex team for the smooth running of the event on the day. John Shucksmith
ORGANISERS COMMENTS It has been at least 10 years since I last organised a reasonable sized event but not too much has changed since then, risk assessment forms have appeared, car park charges have almost become normal, electronic punching is now ubiquitous and is definitely labour saving but does have the potential to do something totally unexpected given half a chance. The parking/assembly field is an organiser's dream but did need a few road repairs to make the entry road passable. I hope that you all enjoyed the Scenic Drive through Rushmore Estate. Thanks to Rob Hick for his earth removal and hole filling on Saturday to avoid the removal of essential parts from beneath your cars. One thing that hasn't changed over the years is the willingness of Wessex members to turn out in strength on the day and to provide a professional event team, thanks to everyone who helped. I personally enjoyed escaping from the download computers, which is my usual job, enjoying the Sunshine and watching the event unfold, I even managed to do the string course. The numbers of entries
were rather less than we had hoped for but this is always the curse
of Orienteering. It is a very difficult job to guess the variable parts
of an event such as numbers of Loos and maps in order to form a compromise
between the event's profitability and a good experience for competitors.
Estimates of course entrants based on historic data proved very wrong
when everyone suddenly decided to run a Green course, we had to ask
two potential Green Course competitors to run an alternative. Thanks also to Tracy Crickmore and family for planning and running a String Course. This had no entries until late in the morning but then was overwhelmed as soon as Tracy went off for a run, however daughter Emma and Rebecca Houlder coped admirably in mother's absence. Also thanks to John Shucksmith who hovered quietly around observing but let me off lightly with organisational changes. Finally thanks to the Management of Rushmore Estate for their kind permission to run the event in this beautiful part of Dorset. Alan Hooper

Pooh’s String Course results
The string course had a Winnie the Pooh theme. It was quite
adventurous in places and was scented with garlic
throughout. After a slow start it was well attended, Eeyore,
Tigger, Rabbit and Pooh visited and could be spotted
if you looked carefully.
