Poole Park Saturday 2 January 2010
My Mother
has an endearing habit, every time we take her somewhere she says
"it's the best day she has ever had". I am sure she
would
have thought the Wessex events on Saturday one of those days.
The weather,
as usual, paid a part and both the Day and Evening races were
held under wonderful conditions. Bright and crisp for the
day bought out the numbers to Poole Park and there were a number
who, although not taking part, took away details of the club.
The Evening
race was hotly contested with competitors from as far a field
as Moray and New Zealand - word is obviously spreading
about this race! Instructions were, as usual, fairly complicated
to ensure everyone got their monies worth for an hours score around
such
a limited area. We are fortunate to have such talented Orienteers
in the club and the benchmark I use for this event is to ensure
that Dale
can get all the controls - just. In the event Dale got all bar
one with 4 minutes to spare so I think the right level was achieved.
The way the
'rules' are designed means that by some judicious control picking
you can do very well even though you might not be quite up to
Dales
National standard. Certainly there was some 'needle' amongst some
competitors with Eamon coming out on top in the Staunton household
courtesy of Kirsty being 5 seconds late! Eddie Harwood set out
to collect all the controls come what may, but got back and realised
he
had missed one! My apologies to Rob Jessop from New Zealand, I
only had the instructions in English rather than his native language
and
judging from the results there was obviously something lost in
translation. As a consolation I am offering him free entry to
next years event!
Finally my
sincere thanks to Ian Sayer and Eric Whapples for their help during
the day event (and Ian for putting out some of the night controls).
Great thanks also to Rob Hick and Tim Houlder for their help in
collecting the night controls in - the control boxes were getting
seriously
frosted by the time we had the last one in.
