It is a shame you did not get the opportunity to see this lovely area of the New Forest at it's best but I am afraid we had no control over the weather. Believe me we would all have preferred a bright sunny day. However orienteers
are a tough lot and I was surprised how good-natured everyone was
on their return. The longer courses had the opportunity of visiting the new extension to the map onto Dur Hill, which provided a change of terrain (even if webbed feet would have been an advantage). The original intention was to have the start near the beginning of the camp site and send courses off through the site but late on we were refused permission as they had people working on site preparing for the opening the following weekend. Hence the change
which resulted in rather a long walk to the start. However, my own
preference is to have the walk before the start and a short distance
back from the finish when you are tired. Most finishers
I heard commenting in the download tent seemed to have enjoyed their
courses so I hope your memories of the area remain good ones rather
than bad.
I am sure this event went through as many changes and problems as any other, so there is nothing particular to report in this area. Perhaps I could relate briefly the defining moments of the weekend as I see them: - Worst moment: Realizing at about 8 o'clock on Saturday evening that the 'nearly new' blue Download tent was not going to survive the night upright. Good job I was on site. Funniest moments: Finding out the 'O' directing signs that had appeared early on Saturday morning at Thorney Hill crossroads but facing the wrong way were not ours, but for a SOC training event being held nearby that morning. Not only that but at least two WSX helpers on route at midday to set up for our event thought they were ours and helpfully turned them round. Best moment: Happening to be at the finish to see the first competitor to complete a course. A junior naturally, and what a picture of health and enthusiasm she was. Charlie Morton
Having lost the original area the timescale for mapping, planning, and controlling an event on Dur Hill and Holmsley was rather short. However, comments on Ian's courses were favourable on the day despite the atrocious weather conditions. The winning time on M21L of 74:24 for 12.5 km confirms that the course lengths were about right. Underfoot conditions had actually been much drier and therefore quicker until a few days before the event. M35L, M45L, W35L, W45L all had slower times than M40L, M50L, W40L, W50L respectively on the same courses, but I am told that 'controller's discretion' no longer applies, so the badge times remain rather generous for the younger of these age classes. My thanks to the Wessex team for coping so well with the conditions on the day, and also to Bill Brown for being so accommodating with the requests for last minute changes to the map and course layouts. We had no comments about the angled magnetic north lines, which hopefully means the map layout worked in practice. John
