Controller’s Comments

Any ‘O’ event run over any of Dorset’s heathland forests in early September is always going to be tough, but this summer’s fantastic weather meant that the areas south of the car parking were almost as bad as they could have been.  I say almost because the recent prolonged dry spell resulted in a noticeable improvement in conditions over those experienced when checking the control sites 6 weeks earlier!

Planning ‘ideal’ courses on an area constrained by mixed ownerships, land uses, public roads and unpleasant bogs is no easy task, but Celia and Peter did a magnificent job in squeezing the best out of what is a far from ideal area.  Without doubt those who stayed in the northern part of the map experienced the best terrain, while those who ventured further south got value for money when measured by minutes per £.  All courses of Red and lighter sat comfortably within the BOF Guidelines while all of the darker courses, with the exception of the Brown, gave a far wider spread of times than expected.

  White – Light Green Courses

Very early on I decided to confirm the shorter courses inside the area to the north as it is much more interesting and runnable than the rest of the map.   The exception to this was Red, which had 3 controls south of the road.

White – Red all had the majority of finish times well within BOF guidelines and it was gratifying to watch so many competitors finishing enthusiastically.

The times on the Light Green were rather longer than I expected.  I had run the course myself using what I thought would be the most difficult routes …….. but in much cooler weather!  Nevertheless, everyone I spoke to seemed to enjoy the course.

Green – Brown Courses

Planning was made difficult by the fact that there were good areas separated by what can only be described as ‘grot’.  Hence some long path runs which in this area I am sure you will agree were preferable to having to go through even more rough stuff.

For most competitors, brown seemed to be about right, but I must apologise as Blue and Green were obviously too long.

We both ran Green some weeks before the event, using different routes and got times which were roughly what we would expect.  However, on the day the heat was a factor, which pushed the times up.  In spite of this, most comments were positive.

Peter Robertson

Many thanks to Peter Brett, Charlie Morton, Alan Hooper and Bill Brown for all their help in nursing us through our first major planning exercise.  Also the many willing helpers who put out boxes and took in controls, and anyone else who helped in any way.

The team works!

We would like to wish Mike Nelson a speedy recovery and return home after being taken ill while on his course on Sunday.

String Course

I planned the String course ages ago and at that time chose a beautiful control called ‘Berry Tree’ – bit silly really as it became, in September, an insignificant tree with no berries at all.  Still, they liked the ‘Animal Hole’ (with rabbit peering out of it) and the enormous Indian-like ‘Wigwam hide’.

The start of the String was tied to a gorse bush and while standing by it, the bush shook and the string disappeared all in an instant.  It was quite unnerving, so I sent the children into the forest to find out if any competitor had fallen over and was lying injured! No bodies were found, but we later heard that a deer had run through the Start (not far from us) so it must have run into the string and pulled it along with it for a bit. (Good job no children got pulled along too – suppose there is only so much you can think about in the Risk Assessment!)

Ably assisted by Rachel & Sarah Beech, James & Emma Crickmore and Alex Jackson, we had 28 runners in total.  I had a lovely weekend, and by the time you read this, my sunburn/tan will have probably peeled!

Thanks to the children’s mums for helping to bring in the course, and taking down the tent.
