Organiser's Comments:
What a weekend! Great turn out from all of you, a warm sunny spring day and my club colleagues did me proud with all the various teams pulling together brilliantly. I learned a lot from this event, such as orienteers are in general an intellegent lot, but can't follow simple instructions, not even when presented in a flow chart with yes/no options!! Get used to it - if I'm ever asked to organise again, I'll do flow charts again. The problem is, you take a hand-out from the car park marshal and then don't actually read it through!! If you did, we wouldn't have questions like, "Where's the entry form?" So come on, please try harder - I put a lot of work into doing a fool-proof hand-out! The other thing I observed was that you insisted on 'crowding' Enquiries and Payment; when I asked you all to step back and give them some space and air, I was regarded as a 2 headed dragon - next time, it'll be the post office voice "Cashier no 2" & there will be severe taped funnelling before you get anywhere near them!

Thank goodness the sun did shine, as some of you had to wait for your download. We had 3 problems: two SI software system problems & a power safety matter. Also, one control made a nonsense of splits times on subsequent legs, arising from the change from GMT to BST. However, within 3 days all the data for the event was recovered & full results with split times were posted on our website. Apologies from the SI Team for this, & for there not being any 'on the day results' posted.

It was a pleasure to see so many family groups, picnics and antics going on (there seemed to be a head standing contest in one area). I hope that the marshalled junior courses (on bike) - offered reassurance to the competitors and their parents.

Throughout this event I have been assisted by Tracy who now is a fully-fledged Organiser - beware, she takes no prisoners! On the day Tracy helped at First Aid/ Dibber Hire/Shadowed her kiddies around a course/stayed to see that all competitors were accounted for, and then packed tents away & dismantled control stations - many, many thanks!

Planner's Comments:
I've known, and planned several informal events on, the southern section (Greenberry Bridge) over the last few years, but it was a special pleasure to plan the courses for the Dorset Delight (OK, we all know it's not in Dorset) on the recently re-mapped and extended area.

Fortunately, there were no Forestry Commission restrictions on the areas that I could use, although the uncrossable-fenced areas tended to channel the routes more than I would have liked. Also, the unexpectedly high turnout meant that many of the courses crossed the track where cars were parked. I hope that this did not distract too many competitors. Due also to the lack of detailed contour features in the northern part of the map, and the plethora of root stocks, I'm afraid that the variety of control features may not have been as great as competitors would have liked.

I have one big apology to make for those on Course 1 - control 554 was placed in the wrong position. However, having examined the splits for this control, the Controller and myself don't believe that this affected the results in any way. Due to a recent controlled burn of the vegetation in that area, the control was in fact much more visible than initially intended.

Some comments were also received about the positioning of control 674. Having carefully re-checked this however, I maintain that the positioning was correct.

Finally, I would like to thank the supportive and constructive nature of Robert's controlling of the event. The whole process was very relaxed and enjoyable, though tiring. The glass(es) of wine on Sunday evening were well earned I thought!
I hope all competitors enjoyed the event as much as I did.

Controller's Comments:
I hope you all enjoyed the new Bisterne map! It provides entertaining orienteering though it can't be said to be very technical. It is almost impossible to avoid path options in the Inclosures but I thought Julie made excellent use of what was available to her. As a controller I wish I could always have such a well organised planner! Because of the parking constraints it was only the longer courses which were able to visit the open heathland but judging from the results I feel that most classes got their money's worth. The exception to this was W60L which makes me think that the BOF class combinations need to be looked at again.

There were one or two map oddities and with hindsight perhaps it was unwise to have used control 554. However I would agree with Julie that no one on Course 1 was unduly disadvantaged and that it was not necessary to remove this leg from the results.
The SI system continues to be plagued by unexpected problems and not for the first time has it caused the Download and Results team a headache. I hope it won't be too long before we see an improved version of the system. This apart the organisation was otherwise impeccable. Well done Liz and the Wessex team!

String Course Comments:
It was with some hesitation that we agreed to set up the string course, for although we'd been members of the Club for a couple of years we still considered ourselves to be amateurs. So this would be our first attempt - & maybe the last! A week before the event we all set off i.e. myself, husband Nick, daughters Rachel(12) and Sarah(10) to take a look at the location and plan the map, with the help of Fern Horsey. We took several wrong turns in the New Forest & had to stop a few times to discuss and find our bearings - I am an orienteer who can't even read a road map correctly! Eventually we arrived, armed with masking tape, paper, pen etc. we set about planning the route. Meanwhile my so called "helpers", Rachel & Sarah decided they would go off and explore a little. The ground was quite boggy despite the glorious sunny day, and I wondered if it would be even more boggy by the time of the event. We looked for some rather obvious and interesting land features as our checkpoints, we were quite lucky in this respect, there were plenty. So having marked our points, and completed a rough sketch of the map, we settled at one of the picnic tables for lunch.

I had a couple of attempts at drawing up the map (I am no artist) & when satisfied had 40 copies run off, hoping that would be sufficient. We set the course up the afternoon before the event, it was a lovely sunny afternoon, when there's no better place to be than in the countryside. So we stuck the canes in, hung the kites and unraveled the string, planning to return early the next morning to hang the bug pictures up to make it a little more interesting for the kids.

Our other big boob was to put the last checkpoint too close to the start, so there was a danger of the children starting it in reverse, unless we instructed each and every one of them. Well we have certainly learnt by experience! Although we had tried to avoid boggy areas I heard that one child managed to loose a shoe in the bog at some point - hope it was retreived. Around noon, Catherine Boulton relieved us so that we could go for a run ourselves. The Orange course we did took longer than anticipated, so by the time we returned, Catherine had very kindly brought the course in for us and the small mountain of fresh fruit prizes had diminished considerably, so they obviously went down well.

We'd never realized quite how much time and effort went into setting up a string course, so my admiration goes out to those who regularly set up colour coded/badge events.
