Wessex
night League - Poole Park 2 January 2011
Organisers
comments:
Excellent
weather, well it was 8 degrees warmer than the usual minus
5 we have for this race. My thanks to you the competitors
for a fantastic turnout. The ease of the terrain coupled
with the convoluted rules seems to appeal at this time of
year. My rationale is to create a race that Dale Paget can
just complete within the time limit. Last year was slightly
on the tough side with Dale missing one control, this year
I think I got it right.
Poole
Park brings its own problems with local nightlife. I don't
use control flags, a) to give you more of a challenge, b)
to keep the controls as inconspicuous as possible. However
inconspicuousness is of course voided as soon as a competitor
goes to a control. This year we had two problems: Early
on control 111 thicket end, the control box went missing,
this was replaced quite quickly (thanks Ian). However control
118 also went walkabout. There were a number of local lads
jumping out and trying to scare competitors around here
and Rob Hick when realising 118 was missing gave chase and
managed to collar one of the little darlings. Marching him
back to the scene of the crime the youth showed Rob the
tree they had thrown the stake and box up into. However
there was no sign of it. Rob sent the youth on his way with
a few wise words ringing in his ear. Later Tim & Sarah
Houlder returned and found the control way up in the tree
(I still haven't found out how they got it down!). Box 111
never turned up unfortunately.
In
the results you will see a column headed "Org Adj".
I have attempted to adjust scores for what I consider to
be competitor may have achieved if they hadn't spent the
time looking for controls 111 and 118. If you feel if I
have got this wrong for you then let me know. This was made
a little difficult as a couple of competitors, having not
got 118 (a 40 pointer) quickly readjusted and took in a
couple more 30 pointers after. In these cases I accepted
118 and have allowed them to keep the lesser points scored
afterwards. The red highlighted squares show scores ruled
out (I think Kay was just experimenting with night O rather
than competing properly). I had wanted to award Rob with
90 "Org Adj" for the time he lost, but having
reviewed his route he omitted controls 106,108 and 109 early
on so even if 118 had been in place the maximum points he
could have collected was 460, to which is I have adjusted
his score.
I
hope you all have much fun orienteering this year.
